Indiana Surgeon Performs State’s First Advanced Bunion Repair
At Lakeshore Surgicare in Chesterton, orthopedic surgeon Hassan Usmani, D.P.M., has become the first physician in Indiana to utilize the Arthrex Lapidus I-Beam Plate and BunionBrace system. This minimally invasive approach represents a shift in how surgeons address hallux valgus, prioritizing joint preservation over traditional, more invasive bony procedures.

The procedure utilizes the Lapidus I-Beam Plate to secure bones in a corrected position, while the BunionBrace acts as a stabilization system for the medial capsule. By reinforcing the big toe joint, the technology aims to restore natural foot alignment and mechanics while reducing the likelihood of future recurrence. Dr. Usmani, a double board-certified specialist at Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute, noted that this method bridges the gap between conservative care and heavy surgery, offering patients a path to improved mobility with less downtime.
Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute CEO Thor Thordarson emphasized that the integration of this technology aligns with the practice’s focus on personalized, patient-centered outcomes. Since its founding in 1968, the institute has expanded to six locations across northwest Indiana, and this adoption marks its latest effort to provide specialized orthopedic solutions locally. Patients seeking alternatives to conventional bunion surgery now have a localized option designed to improve comfort and support a quicker return to daily activities.
