ASML Leads Fortune’s 2026 Ranking of Europe’s Most Innovative Companies

The 2026 ranking underscores the concentration of industrial power within a select group of nations. Germany maintains the highest volume of representatives with 56 firms, while Switzerland, France, the U.K., and Italy round out the top five, collectively accounting for 71% of the total entries. Notably, France secured four of the top ten positions, signaling a robust output from its manufacturing and healthcare sectors.

Technology and finance remain the most represented industries, housing 48 and 32 companies respectively. The data suggests that scale remains a primary driver of sustained innovation, as over 75% of the featured organizations employ more than 10,000 workers. ASML Holding secured the top spot through its advancements in extreme ultraviolet technology and computational lithography, which are critical to the evolution of global chip density and energy efficiency.

Grethe Schepers, Fortune’s Lists Director for Europe, noted that the selected companies are successfully translating research into tangible economic growth across diverse markets. The rankings were officially unveiled at the VivaTech conference in Paris, where leadership from firms including Schneider Electric, EY, and Electrolux Group gathered to discuss the collaborative ecosystems fueling these technological breakthroughs. The full index evaluates companies with over 250 employees to identify those effectively setting the pace for regional progress.
