Electrify America Launches High-Capacity Charging Hub in Santa Barbara

Replacing a former Greyhound depot at 36 West Carrillo Street, Electrify America has activated a new large-format charging hub in downtown Santa Barbara. The site features 20 Hyper-Fast 350 kW chargers, marking a significant expansion of the company’s infrastructure to meet rising demand for zero-emission vehicle support in California.

The facility distinguishes itself through the integration of a 1.9 megawatt battery energy storage system, the largest public deployment of its kind for the company to date. By capturing grid energy during off-peak hours and utilizing renewable sources, the system mitigates strain on local infrastructure while ensuring high-power availability for commuters. Company CEO Rob Barrosa noted that the storage technology allows for rapid charging in dense urban centers that previously lacked the capacity to support such high-voltage demands.

This location serves as the company's second site in the city, complementing an existing station on State Street. It joins a growing network of large-format hubs across California, including installations in Santa Monica, San Diego, and San Francisco. State officials, including Senator Monique Limón and Assemblymember Gregg Hart, emphasized that the expansion is vital for lowering consumer fuel costs and accelerating the state’s transition to zero-emission vehicles. While the station currently utilizes CCS connectors, Electrify America plans to integrate NACS connectors through a pilot program later this summer.
