Instagram brings its Edits video editor to macOS

Instagram’s Edits video editor is now available on macOS, with support for connecting AI agents through an MCP interface. Creators can use an agent to assemble or adjust footage, then switch to manual editing in the desktop app, according to Matthew Simari, Edits’ head of product management.

Simari told The Verge that Edits Desktop exposes its tools through an MCP, allowing users to work with an agent of their choice, including Meta’s Muse. In his example, a creator could ask Muse to access a video in their downloads folder and produce a rough cut. The project could then be opened in Edits for further editing.

The app first launched on mobile platforms last year. Simari said creators had been “heavily” requesting a desktop version, while Instagram’s plans for AI also contributed to the move to macOS. The desktop app includes more advanced color-grading tools and lets users move between agent-assisted and manual editing.

Instagram added an AI “creative assistant” to the mobile version of Edits in September. It offers video suggestions and feedback using account data and metrics, including views and audience retention. The desktop release follows Instagram’s push into long-form, widescreen video, which can be easier to edit on a larger screen.
