Hardware flaw behind early iPhone Duo screen failures

Hours after the iPhone Duo hit shelves last Friday, users began flooding social media with images of spiderweb cracks and display lines appearing directly over the device's hinge. Apple has since confirmed the defect, offering replacements for affected units while remaining silent on the total number of damaged handsets reported.

The failure appears to be a mechanical clash between the display and the internal chassis. Shahram Mokhtari, lead teardown technician at iFixit, suggests the issue stems from the hinge’s complex assembly of gears and springs. While these components are designed to allow the phone to fold flat without creating a harsh crease, they are physically compromising the panel.

At the point of failure, the flexible inner screen is being forced against a rigid part of the hinge mechanism. Because the display is exceptionally fragile, even minor pressure from the internal metal components can cause the screen to shatter from the inside out. This explains the distinctive black spots visible in user photos, which align perfectly with the contact points where the hinge hardware meets the underside of the display.
