Brazil Bars Jair Bolsonaro From Public Office for Eight Years

The Superior Electoral Court in Brazil ruled Friday to strip former president Jair Bolsonaro of his eligibility to hold public office until 2030, citing his systematic abuse of power and the dissemination of baseless claims regarding the integrity of the nation’s electronic voting system during his term.

Five of the seven judges on the court concluded that Bolsonaro committed a serious electoral violation last July. At the Palacio da Alvorada, the former president held a televised session with international diplomats to disparage the judiciary and falsely characterize the country’s three-decade-old voting infrastructure as vulnerable to manipulation. TSE President Alexandre de Moraes described the event as a calculated performance designed to bombard voters with disinformation and undermine faith in the democratic process.

Bolsonaro, often dubbed the 'Trump of the Tropics,' now faces 15 additional election-related charges. Legal analysts and political observers suggest this ruling effectively terminates his prospects for a presidential comeback. While supporters of the former leader previously staged mass protests and stormed government buildings in January to contest his defeat, current officials view this verdict as a vital step toward institutional accountability. Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sônia Guajajara welcomed the decision, noting that the former president must still answer for broader allegations concerning his policies toward marginalized communities and his conduct during his tenure.
