Trump Claims Google CEO Blocked Atlantic Ocean Renaming
“Oceans are different, sir,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly told Donald Trump when the president floated the idea of renaming the Atlantic Ocean. While Google and Apple previously complied with executive orders to rename other geographical landmarks on their digital maps, Pichai allegedly drew a firm line at the world’s major oceans.

The exchange, recounted by Trump during a Wednesday night rally, highlights the ongoing tension between executive pressure and the digital cartography giants that control global navigation data. Trump noted that he reached out to the Google executive specifically to facilitate the rebranding, citing the company's previous cooperation on Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico. Despite Trump’s insistence that he wanted to rebrand the Atlantic or Pacific as the "American Ocean," Pichai pushed back, warning that such a change would trigger international fallout due to the vast number of countries the waters touch.
While Google and Apple have mirrored these name changes across their platforms, the move has not been universal. Other services, including MapQuest, have resisted the directive, opting to retain traditional nomenclature. Trump, however, remains undeterred in his search for legacy branding, admitting he is still scouting for a river to rename, provided it does not disrupt iconic waterways like the Mississippi.
