Public Citizen Slams AI Giants Over 'Disgusting' Regulatory Hypocrisy
A leading government watchdog is challenging the artificial intelligence industry for warning about cyber threats after years of lobbying against the very oversight that could have mitigated them. Public Citizen argues that tech giants are now seeking government intervention only to protect their own interests while ignoring public safety.

Dozens of firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, and Microsoft, issued an open letter this week claiming a narrow window exists to prevent AI-driven cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. They advocate for a global response involving government-funded defense and increased access to security tools. However, critics view this shift as a calculated PR maneuver designed to secure public funding and avoid genuine accountability.
JB Branch, director of federal AI governance at Public Citizen, labeled the industry’s stance "staggering and disgusting." He highlighted the contradiction of companies that previously fought tooth and nail against regulation to avoid losing a competitive edge against China, only to demand state support when the risks they helped manufacture become unavoidable. Branch asserts that if the threats are truly as dire as these companies claim, the solution is binding rules and independent oversight rather than further enriching Silicon Valley.
This aggressive pivot follows reports that major tech firms are scrambling to mend ties with Democratic lawmakers ahead of the 2026 midterms. Having heavily funded Donald Trump, these companies now fear that a shift in political power could lead to invasive subpoenas and criminal investigations. Strategists have warned donors that repairing these relationships will come at a significant cost, suggesting that the industry's newfound concern for security is as much about political survival as it is about technological stability.
