Evonik Commits 150 Million CAD to Expand Vancouver Biotech Hub
Evonik is funneling over 150 million CAD into a new Good Manufacturing Practice facility in Vancouver, aiming to triple its production capacity for lipid-based drug delivery systems. The project, slated for completion in 2029, secures 68 million CAD in backing from the Canadian federal government’s Strategic Response Fund.
The investment marks a significant expansion for the German chemical giant within British Columbia’s life sciences sector. By enhancing its local infrastructure, the company intends to streamline the development of advanced therapeutics and vaccines, addressing the surging global demand for lipid nanoparticle technologies. The new site will integrate upgraded quality control and microbiological testing to accelerate the transition of products from clinical trials to commercial-scale manufacturing.
Guido Skudlarek, head of Evonik’s Health Care business line, noted that the expansion reinforces the company's regional presence within one of North America’s most active biotech ecosystems. The project leverages the area's deep talent pool and the research foundation provided by the University of British Columbia, which has long served as a catalyst for local pharmaceutical innovation. With the lipid nanoparticle market projected to reach 2.7 billion USD by 2034, this facility will function as a central node in Evonik's global network, connecting development labs in Vancouver to manufacturing sites across the United States and Germany.
