Corewell Health to Invest $1.7 Billion in Michigan Hospital Expansion

The bulk of the capital, $1.34 billion, is earmarked for the Butterworth Hospital campus in Grand Rapids. The project involves an 11-story, 780,000-square-foot facility featuring 180 private rooms, 17 operating rooms, and a new emergency department. With the hospital’s census consistently exceeding 90% capacity, officials argue the expansion is critical to maintaining its status as the region’s only Level I trauma center. Construction is slated to begin in summer 2027, pending final municipal approvals for the site at 230 Michigan St. and 330 Barclay Ave.

In Southeast Michigan, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital will receive a $440 million infusion for a new eight-story, 423,000-square-foot tower. Designed to alleviate pressure on an emergency department that handles over 106,000 visits annually, the addition will provide 180 private rooms equipped with advanced monitoring technology. The design emphasizes navigation, creating direct access from the parking deck to the emergency area. Beyond the main towers, the system is concurrently developing an ambulatory center in Oxford and a cardiac surgery facility in Sterling Heights. Construction across all sites is expected to conclude by 2030, utilizing partnerships with firms including The Christman Company, Spesh Construction, and Barton Malow.
