Tianjin University Unveils First Full-Stack MRI-Based BCI System

Four hundred researchers and industry leaders gathered in Tianjin on August 23 to witness the debut of uMR ShenGuan. Developed by Tianjin University and United Imaging Healthcare, this system marks the first comprehensive platform designed to bridge the gap between neuroscientific research and clinical BCI applications.

The uMR ShenGuan platform operates across United Imaging’s 3.0T, 5.0T, and 9.4T MRI systems, providing a closed-loop workflow for neurological intervention. By integrating signal acquisition, decoding, and neural modulation, the technology achieves millisecond temporal resolution and submillimeter structural precision. Engineers specifically addressed the challenge of electromagnetic interference, allowing the hardware to remain compatible with standard scanning environments while performing real-time brain activity monitoring.

This release follows a year of collaborative technical validation that began in October 2025. To support the transition from laboratory prototypes to hospital use, the partners also launched an innovation alliance. This coalition aims to standardize BCI protocols and facilitate multi-center clinical trials, connecting academic research with regulatory requirements and commercial manufacturing.
