Apple Music introduces optional transparency tags for AI content

Apple is asking artists and record labels to voluntarily disclose the use of artificial intelligence in their work through a new metadata system. The initiative, dubbed Transparency Tags, covers four distinct categories—tracks, compositions, artwork, and music videos—marking a push for greater clarity in an increasingly automated streaming landscape.

The system applies when AI generates a material portion of a sound recording or specific compositional elements like lyrics. For visuals, labels must tag static or moving album art, as well as standalone or bundled music videos. Multiple tags can be applied to a single release if it incorporates different types of synthetic media.

Apple views this disclosure as a foundational step toward industry-wide transparency. Unlike competitors such as Deezer and Qobuz, which utilize proactive detection tools to identify synthetic content, Apple is placing the burden of disclosure entirely on distributors and record labels. Under these guidelines, content providers retain the discretion to determine what qualifies as AI-generated, and the platform will not assume AI usage in the absence of a tag. This reliance on voluntary compliance mirrors broader industry struggles to enforce honesty policies in generative media, leaving the actual adoption of these labels uncertain.
