Public Support for AI Data Centers Collapses Across Party Lines
A new poll from Embold Research reveals a striking reversal in American public opinion, with 75% of voters now opposing the construction of artificial intelligence data centers in their communities. This shift marks a dramatic departure from last year, when public sentiment was evenly split between support and opposition.

The survey, published by Heatmap Pro, highlights a uniform rejection of these facilities across all demographics, regardless of income, age, or political affiliation. Data centers are currently 43 points underwater with Republican voters, 65 points with independents, and 75 points with Democrats. Robinson Meyer, executive editor at Heatmap, described the trend as a massive transformation in public perception that defies traditional partisan divides.
Industry observers and analysts expressed genuine surprise at the velocity of this shift. Justin Slaughter, vice president of regulatory affairs at Paradigm, noted that opponents are successfully converting former supporters directly into active critics. This rising hostility stems from broader concerns regarding the industry, including the use of restrictive nondisclosure agreements with local officials, fears over job displacement, and the environmental impact on utility bills and local pollution. While Donald Trump recently championed the facilities as job engines, critics point out that these structures offer minimal long-term employment relative to their massive physical and energy footprint.
