This collaboration focuses on creating a scalable computing environment capable of supporting everything from Level 2+ driver assistance systems to fully autonomous Level 4 operations. By porting TIER IV’s Autoware and end-to-end AI models onto Renesas' R-Car Gen 5 architecture, the companies seek to provide automakers with a standardized, production-ready foundation that moves beyond fixed-function hardware.

TIER IV founder and CEO Shinpei Kato emphasized that the partnership addresses the critical need for computing platforms that execute complex AI models efficiently at scale. Renesas, represented by SoC Division head Aish Dubey, views the project as a realization of their vision for unified vehicle intelligence. The partners plan to showcase the practical application of this integrated platform at Automotive World 2026, where they will demonstrate Autoware running on the R-Car X5H chip. Beyond current hardware, TIER IV is simultaneously researching AI accelerators tailored for transformer-based models and advanced sensing technologies, including LiDAR and 4D radar, to ensure the platform remains adaptable to future architectural shifts.
