ICC Defies US Sanctions Targeting Its Judiciary

The International Criminal Court has formally denounced new US sanctions against its leadership as a flagrant assault on the global legal order. The measures, announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, target President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Saye, marking a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and The Hague.

The court declared itself undeterred by the move, vowing to maintain its mandate despite the pressure. The latest round of penalties brings the total number of sanctioned ICC personnel to half of its 18 judges, alongside key prosecutors. These officials have faced scrutiny primarily for their investigative work regarding alleged war crimes in Gaza, specifically those involving Israeli leadership.

International reaction has been swift, with the Netherlands—the host nation of the tribunal—condemning the interference. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen affirmed that international courts must operate free from coercion. Human Rights Watch echoed this sentiment, characterizing the sanctions as a transparent attempt to shield American and Israeli officials from accountability for serious crimes. The administration’s campaign has previously targeted former prosecutor Karim Khan, who sought arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
