LG Launches Integrated 5G Telematics for Premium European Vehicles

A premium European automaker has begun deploying LG Electronics’ new 5G-based smart telematics system, marking the first mass-production use of the technology in Europe. By condensing a communications module and 12 antennas into one unit, the design eliminates the need for scattered external components and bulky radio frequency cabling.

The shift toward software-defined vehicles has forced manufacturers to pack an increasing number of antennas into limited spaces to support 5G, Wi-Fi, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. Traditional setups, which often rely on externally mounted shark-fin antennas and multiple distributed units, complicate assembly and add weight that directly impacts the range of electric vehicles. LG’s new solution, built on the 5G Release 16 standard, addresses these constraints by housing up to 12 antennas within a single, modular unit.

Beyond hardware consolidation, the system utilizes LG’s proprietary Automotive Telematics Platform (ATP). This software architecture allows for greater reuse across different vehicle models, requiring only minor adjustments for specific chipset interfaces. This design choice aims to improve development speed and provide supply chain flexibility by supporting various communications chipsets. According to Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company, the integration is intended to serve as core infrastructure for the future of mobility, specifically facilitating over-the-air updates and the high-speed data transmission required for autonomous driving.
