MDU Resources Lifts Dividend as Payout Strategy Shifts

Shareholders of MDU Resources Group will see a 3.6% boost to their quarterly dividend, bringing the payout to 14.5 cents per share. The move, effective October 1, coincides with a strategic recalibration of the company’s long-term payout targets to better balance capital investment with investor returns.

The board of directors approved the increase from the previous 14-cent payout, setting an annualized rate of 56 cents. Alongside this bump, the firm lowered its long-term dividend payout ratio target to a range of 55% to 65% of earnings, down from the prior 60% to 70% threshold. This adjustment aims to grant the company greater financial flexibility to fund infrastructure projects and reduce reliance on equity financing.

CEO Nicole Kivisto noted that the revised target helps maintain a balanced approach to funding utility and pipeline operations, which are seeing increased demand across the Pacific Northwest and Midwest. The company, which has a track record of uninterrupted dividend payments spanning over eight decades, will distribute the upcoming payment to stockholders of record by September 10. This decision underscores the board's outlook on the firm’s financial stability as it continues to invest in its 3,800-mile natural gas network.
