Xbox developers gain access to AMD FSR 4 upscaling

Xbox Series X and S developers now have official access to AMD’s latest FSR 4 upscaling technology, providing new tools to balance visual fidelity against hardware performance. The update, detailed in recent GitHub documentation, allows studios to choose between Lite and Full versions of the software to optimize frame rates.

The integration offers flexibility for creators working within the hardware constraints of Microsoft’s current-generation consoles. While the Lite version provides a lighter processing footprint, the Full implementation carries a 5.2ms performance cost on the Xbox Series S. This overhead is significant enough to drop a 60fps title to roughly 45fps if left unoptimized, forcing studios to carefully calibrate their settings.

Developers are encouraged to cycle through available modes during the production process to identify the ideal threshold between image quality and speed. By testing these balance points, studios can mitigate the performance hit on the entry-level Series S while leveraging the more capable Series X hardware, ensuring a smoother experience for players across both platforms.
