Ultra Maritime Tests Autonomous Sonar Network for Undersea Defense
During the U.S. Navy’s 2026 Lanternfish exercise, Ultra Maritime successfully integrated active and passive sonar systems to track unmanned underwater vehicles. The demonstration in Braintree, Massachusetts, marked a shift toward persistent, autonomous surveillance architectures capable of securing critical maritime infrastructure and contested waterways from emerging undersea threats.

The company combined its Sea Spear deployable passive sonar with the new SSQ-125B active sonobuoy to establish a continuous, real-time picture of the battlespace. This configuration supports the organization’s “Ocean of Things” vision, which aims to deploy distributed, intelligent sensor networks from both manned and unmanned platforms. By utilizing these integrated technologies, the Navy can expand the reach and effectiveness of anti-submarine warfare operations across varying environments, ranging from port defense to long-duration surveillance missions.
At the core of this capability is the SSQ-125B, currently the only active sonobuoy of its type in production. Its integration with the Sea Spear creates a unified ecosystem that addresses the growing challenge of localizing autonomous underwater vehicles. With operations spanning the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Australia, Ultra Maritime intends for this architecture to serve as the foundation for future hybrid maritime dominance, moving beyond traditional detection methods toward a more scalable, persistent model of undersea situational awareness.
