Consumer Product Safety Commission to Relocate Headquarters to D.C.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission will vacate its longtime Bethesda headquarters this October, moving operations to the federally owned Government Accountability Office building in Washington, D.C. The transition marks a strategic shift toward reducing the agency’s reliance on private real estate leases.

The relocation to 441 G Street NW aims to trim the agency's physical footprint by approximately 30 percent. Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman characterized the move as a necessary step in modernizing the agency's infrastructure while demonstrating more responsible stewardship of taxpayer funds. By moving into an existing government-owned facility, the CPSC avoids costly capital investments previously slated for its current location at Bethesda Towers, where the agency has operated since the early 1990s.

Beyond fiscal consolidation, the move aligns with broader federal directives to reduce the government's leased real estate presence. The new location places the commission in closer proximity to the White House and Congress, potentially streamlining collaboration with key federal partners. While the headquarters will shift, the agency’s National Product Testing and Evaluation Center in Rockville, Maryland, will remain in its current facility, ensuring that ongoing product safety oversight and testing operations continue without interruption.
