Quantum Space Wins Defense Contract for Orbital Fuel Depots

The Department of War has awarded Quantum Space a contract to develop a fuel depot spacecraft, marking a transition toward sustained, maneuverable logistics in orbit. The project aims to extend the operational lifespan of high-value U.S. Space Force assets by providing a mobile refueling infrastructure for contested space domains.

Quantum Space will build the depot on its Ranger platform, a maneuverable vehicle designed to support national security operations. By removing traditional fuel constraints, the technology allows for dynamic mission sets that fixed satellite architectures cannot sustain. CEO Jim Bridenstine described the initiative as a shift toward the resilient architecture required for enduring space superiority.

The OECIF award accelerates the deployment of this infrastructure, which is intended to serve as a persistent logistics network. Chris DePuma, lead for the OECIF’s Operational Energy and Combat Power portfolio, noted that the investment moves refueling concepts from long-term roadmaps into active development. Co-Founder Ben Reed, who previously led NASA’s robotic satellite servicing programs, emphasized that the underlying technology is now mature enough to move beyond demonstration phases.

Quantum Space is engineering the Ranger platform for use across geostationary and cislunar orbits, utilizing a patented propulsion system that combines chemical and electric capabilities. This contract follows the company’s existing work on the Andromeda program and coincides with a planned merger with Inflection Point Acquisition Corp. VI, which is expected to bring the company to the Nasdaq exchange later this year.
