SanDisk’s 8TB PS5 SSD Priced Higher Than Three Consoles
A staggering $2,959.99 price tag for SanDisk’s new Optimus GX PRO 850P 8TB SSD has turned the accessory into a luxury item that costs more than three PlayStation 5 Pro consoles combined. The drive, marketed as an officially licensed storage expansion, hits the market amid a volatile global memory shortage.

The pricing structure for the new NVMe line remains steep across all tiers. SanDisk lists the 4TB model at $1,499.99 and the 2TB version at $759.99, a figure that exceeds the cost of a standard PlayStation 5 console by $100. Each unit includes a specialized heatsink engineered specifically for the M.2 slots found in both the PS5 and the PS5 Pro, which SanDisk claims provides the necessary thermal headroom for high-performance gaming.
Market analysis suggests these premiums are extreme. Comparable 8TB drives under the Western Digital brand—SanDisk’s parent company—are currently retailing on Amazon for roughly $1,470. Historical data from PC Part Picker indicates that identical storage capacities were available through major retailers like Best Buy and Newegg for approximately $640 just last year. This new release represents a 360 percent price hike for hardware that offers specifications nearly indistinguishable from existing alternatives.
