First Living Kidney Transplant Completed Under New Donor Pathway
A patient at Hartford Hospital has received a kidney from a living donor, marking the first successful transplant facilitated by the partnership between the National Kidney Registry and Donate Life America. This integration aims to streamline the donor registration process for the 90,000 Americans currently awaiting a lifesaving organ.

The procedure serves as a functional proof of concept for the Donate Life Living Donor Pathway, an initiative launched in November 2025. By linking the National Donate Life Registry with the National Kidney Registry’s support network, the organizations provide potential donors with peer support and financial protections intended to remove common barriers to donation.
Kari Rancourt, a transplant coordinator at Hartford Hospital, noted that living donor kidneys generally offer better outcomes and shorter wait times for recipients. The collaboration leverages the reach of the National Donate Life Registry, which has registered millions of individuals, alongside the National Kidney Registry’s experience in facilitating over 12,000 paired exchange transplants. For those on the national waiting list, this project represents a concentrated effort to convert public willingness to donate into actionable, medical outcomes.
