California Conservation Corps Marks Half-Century of Youth Development

The California Conservation Corps (CCC) is observing its golden anniversary with a six-stop bus tour traveling from San Diego to Chico, culminating in a major expo at the California Natural Resources Agency headquarters in Sacramento. Since July 7, 1976, the program has operated as the nation’s largest and longest-running conservation corps, focusing on wildfire prevention, habitat restoration, and forest resilience.

Director JP Patton noted that the program provides participants with more than professional certifications, describing the experience as a fundamental transformation for young citizens. Current members are using the anniversary to highlight legacy projects, such as trail building and forest management, which serve as long-term investments in the state's infrastructure. California Secretary for Natural Resources Wade Crowfoot emphasized that the organization remains central to the state's future, particularly as it continues to expand workforce opportunities for foster youth and underserved communities. The celebration serves as both a tribute to past achievements and a recruitment effort for the next generation of environmental stewards.
