Rapidus and Italy’s Chips-IT Forge Semiconductor Design Alliance
Under the shadow of a high-level summit between Prime Ministers Sanae Takaichi and Giorgia Meloni, Japan’s Rapidus Corporation has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Italy’s Fondazione Chips-IT. The agreement aims to bridge Japanese manufacturing prowess with Italian expertise in semiconductor circuit design to bolster regional technology ecosystems.

The partnership, solidified in Italy on June 15, 2026, focuses on integrating Rapidus’s advanced 2nm logic semiconductor technologies into Italy’s growing research infrastructure. For the Pavia-based Chips-IT, the collaboration serves as a blueprint for accelerating industrial development, with CEO Dr. Carlo Reita noting the value of Rapidus’s rapid scaling model for his institute. This move follows a similar agreement inked just one day prior between the Japanese chipmaker and the UK Semiconductor Centre, signaling an aggressive international expansion strategy ahead of the company's 2027 mass-production target.
Dr. Atsuyoshi Koike, CEO of Rapidus, emphasized that the alliance is a cornerstone of the company’s mission to build global semiconductor dependencies that extend beyond domestic borders. By aligning with the European Chips Act objectives, the collaboration aims to secure strategic autonomy in integrated circuit design, leveraging public-private support structures in both nations to push the boundaries of current logic chip capabilities.
