HOA A1 camera puts its lens in an open viewfinder

A camera designed to keep photographers looking at people, not a screen, is the first product from South Korean startup Lutra’s new brand, Humans of Authenticity. The HOA A1 places its lens and sensor near the center of a large open viewfinder, allowing eye contact while composing a shot.

The screen-free camera is reminiscent of the Godox C100, but its open window is built around the position of the lens and sensor. A small LCD on the rear shows basic information, including battery life and remaining shots; framing and shooting are otherwise handled with a shutter button on the top edge.

The HOA A1 First Edition is expected to launch on December 1 in a limited run of 100 units. Preorders have not opened. The price is 360,000 South Korean won, or $289 for US customers. Its specifications include a 16-megapixel, 1/2.53-inch Sony sensor and a 26mm f/1.75 lens.

Lutra has not published extensive details about the camera’s capabilities or sample photos. The company says it is still “fine-tuning the camera’s color and tone in collaboration with photographers.” Images can be made available on a smartphone by connecting the A1 to Wi-Fi and tapping the phone against the camera’s back. An internet connection is not required to take pictures, but Wi-Fi is needed to view and download them.
