Seven individuals define the character of China’s fastest-growing metropolis in a new documentary, Shenzhen: People Who Build the Future. Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Malcolm Clarke, the film moves past the city’s shimmering glass facades to examine the personal grit and ambition driving its relentless technological and cultural expansion.

The narrative centers on a cross-generational cast, ranging from the original laborers who broke ground in the city's infancy to contemporary innovators developing robotics and high-performance vehicles. Clarke, who serves as both writer and narrator, weaves these individual biographies into a broader study of urban resilience. The film highlights international educators and artists as well, illustrating how the city exports Chinese cultural influence while simultaneously absorbing global perspectives.

Produced through a collaboration between the Shenzhen Media Group and Clarke, the project frames the city as a laboratory for human potential. Rather than focusing on macro-economic statistics, the documentary relies on the intimate stories of dreamers who treat the future as a physical project built by hand. It offers a rare, ground-level view of how a once-modest region transformed into a global engine of innovation.
