US Progressives Press Trump to Recognize Lula’s Brazilian Victory

Congressional Progressive Caucus leaders are demanding that Donald Trump formally acknowledge Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s election victory in Brazil. The group accuses the former president of fueling democratic instability by aligning himself with Flávio Bolsonaro’s unsubstantiated claims that the South American nation’s recent electoral process was rigged.

The push comes as tensions mount over the international response to the Brazilian runoff. Reps. Greg Casar, Ilhan Omar, and Jesús G. “Chuy” García issued a joint statement condemning what they describe as a partnership in election denialism, noting that Lula secured his position with a margin of more than 4 million votes. The lawmakers argue that the United States must align with the global consensus to uphold the peaceful transfer of power in the hemisphere’s two largest democracies.

The situation is complicated by the presence of Bolsonaro in Florida, where he has been granted visas despite his continued assertions that the election results were fraudulent. Reports from Folha de São Paulo suggest that the U.S. State Department had drafted a customary congratulatory message for the Brazilian president-elect, only to have it shelved following pressure from Bolsonaro’s camp. This delay has drawn sharp rebukes from Lula’s Workers' Party, which warned against foreign interference in Brazil’s sovereign democratic processes.

Dan Beeton of the Center for Economic and Policy Research noted that the refusal to recognize the outcome risks isolating the U.S. further on the world stage. He argued that the current diplomatic friction stems from years of strained relations, including tariffs and sanctions imposed during the previous administration. For the progressive caucus, the issue is not merely foreign policy but a domestic priority as they prepare to defend electoral integrity ahead of U.S. midterm elections.
