Xbox COO Helen Chiang departs after brief tenure
Helen Chiang is stepping down from her role as Xbox’s first chief operating officer effective immediately, ending a short-lived appointment that began only in July. The departure of the 21-year Microsoft veteran, who previously led the Minecraft franchise, comes as the gaming division navigates a significant organizational restructuring.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed the exit in a brief internal memo, stating that Chiang’s responsibilities will be temporarily redistributed among existing leadership. While Sharma indicated that further updates regarding the future of the COO position will follow, the company declined to provide specifics on the circumstances surrounding the sudden vacancy. The role was originally established to centralize P&L oversight across content, hardware, and services as part of a strategic reset for the brand.
Chiang’s departure arrives against a backdrop of industry speculation regarding potential workforce reductions at Microsoft, with rumors of further layoffs circulating for November and January. During her promotion earlier this year, the executive was tasked with unifying Xbox’s diverse business units under a single operating model to improve accountability and investment strategy. With her exit, the company faces a disruption in the leadership structure intended to guide that transition.
