Apple Experiments With Under-Display Face ID for iPhone Duo
Apple is developing internal prototypes of the next-generation iPhone Duo that incorporate Face ID sensors beneath the outer display. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company aims to restore advanced facial recognition to the device, effectively moving away from the side-mounted Touch ID sensor currently used in the lineup.

The transition to Touch ID on the current iPhone Duo was widely viewed as a hardware regression, forcing users to rely on fingerprint authentication rather than the seamless facial scanning found on flagship models. While reviewers have noted the experience is manageable once integrated into daily habits, the shift remains a compromise for power users.
Integrating the sensor beneath the screen represents a significant technical hurdle for Apple’s engineering teams. By reclaiming space on the outer chassis and eliminating the need for physical biometric contact, the company seeks to return the Duo to its premium roots. These prototypes indicate a clear trajectory toward unifying the authentication experience across Apple’s mobile portfolio.
