Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Prepares Further Staff Reductions
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is preparing to initiate three additional rounds of layoffs between November and January. This strategy follows a broader organizational reset announced in July, which previously outlined a target of 3,200 staff cuts through the 2027 fiscal year to reshape the company’s internal structure and project pipeline.

The upcoming departures accompany significant shifts in the gaming division’s portfolio, including the decision to spin off Double Fine and Compulsion Games as independent entities. Meanwhile, the future of Ninja Theory, the studio behind Senua, remains uncertain as internal reports suggest a potential closure. These moves come alongside a long-term hardware roadmap that includes a next-generation handheld device scheduled for 2027 and a new console, Project Helix, slated for 2028.
Despite persistent industry rumors regarding a potential sale or spinoff of the Xbox brand, Microsoft leadership maintains a firm stance against such speculation. Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business, recently defended Sharma’s leadership, dismissing the possibility of a divestment. Sharma herself reinforced this position in a recent interview, stating clearly that the division is not for sale.
