Apple Tightens App Store Policy Against Nonconsensual AI Nudity
Under mounting pressure from lawmakers and activists, Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to explicitly prohibit applications that generate nonconsensual intimate imagery. The move targets the proliferation of 'nudify' AI tools, mandating that developers implement proactive safeguards or face immediate removal from the platform.

The policy shift follows a wave of public scrutiny after users leveraged X’s Grok AI to create sexualized deepfakes, including those depicting minors. While Apple stopped short of removing X from its store, the company previously confirmed to senators that it threatened to pull the app over the issue. Further action followed in July when the San Francisco city attorney successfully compelled Apple to purge 13 specific apps identified as facilitating nonconsensual image generation.
Under the new requirements announced Friday, developers are held accountable for content moderation failures. Those who neglect to implement adequate protections or refuse to remedy policy breaches after receiving notice risk being banned entirely. Apple has also moved to close loopholes involving 'bait-and-switch' tactics, where developers introduce illicit features like nudification only after an app has cleared the initial approval process. Beyond AI-generated imagery, the updated rules state that any software facilitating human trafficking or the exploitation of children will be blocked from both the App Store and alternative distribution channels.
