Godox A2 brings professional xenon flash power to iPhone photography

Smartphone LEDs struggle to match the illumination depth of dedicated camera flashes, often leaving mobile shots looking flat and artificial. The new Godox A2 addresses this hardware gap by integrating a genuine xenon flash tube into a compact, magnetic iPhone accessory, finally moving beyond the limitations of standard smartphone lighting.

Priced at $85, the device attaches magnetically to the back of an iPhone and carries a rechargeable battery rated for approximately 400 flashes. Beyond its role as a direct attachment, the A2 offers creative flexibility by allowing users to trigger the unit remotely from distances up to 50 feet. This capability enables photographers to experiment with off-camera lighting setups, moving the flash away from the lens to create more dynamic shadows and highlights.

Integration does require a specific workflow, however. To synchronize the xenon burst with the shutter release, users must employ Godox’s proprietary iOS camera application. While this dependency limits the device to a single software ecosystem, it provides the necessary handshake between the smartphone’s electronic shutter and the physical flash tube, bridging the gap between professional lighting gear and mobile hardware.
