Fake WhatsApp App Slips Through Google Play Store Moderation
A deceptive clone of WhatsApp has secured a top sponsored placement on the Google Play Store, managing to bypass moderation despite its suspicious origin. The counterfeit application, which mimics the official branding and interface, has already garnered over 500,000 downloads while remaining active on the platform as of this writing.

The imposter app, published by a developer identified as Agment Assets sallu, appears in search results ahead of the genuine messaging platform. While the real WhatsApp boasts more than 10 billion downloads and carries an editor’s choice badge, the clone relies on identical visual assets to trick unsuspecting users. The developer has no other software listed on the store, a common red flag for malicious or low-quality listings.
Investigations suggest the fake app may be exploiting Google Play’s Early Access program to disable public user reviews. By suppressing the feedback loop, the developers effectively prevent the community from flagging the application as a scam. Google has yet to issue a statement regarding the oversight, leaving the fraudulent listing live and accessible to the public.
