LMAX Digital Adds Physically Backed WTI Crude Oil Token to Exchange
Institutional investors can now trade WTIC, a token backed one-to-one by physical crude oil, on the LMAX Digital exchange. The listing marks a shift in commodity market access, allowing participants to move beyond traditional futures and ETFs into direct, blockchain-based spot exposure for the world's most traded energy commodity.

Energy Substantiation developed the WTIC token to represent a single barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude, with every unit supported by verified physical inventory held in commercial custody. By integrating with LMAX Digital, the token joins a growing ecosystem that already includes Uniswap and BingX, providing a bridge between traditional energy markets and digital asset infrastructure.
JP Thieriot, CEO of Energy Substantiation, noted that the move addresses a lack of evolution in how investors engage with energy commodities. For LMAX Digital, the addition offers institutional clients a way to navigate market volatility outside of conventional trading hours. Managing director Chris Knight highlighted that tokens like WTIC provide a necessary avenue for institutions to respond to macro events that occur during weekends or after traditional market closes, leveraging the speed and accessibility of digital asset execution.
