Jackson County Sheriff's Staff Overwhelmingly Vote to Join Teamsters

With a 99 percent mandate, 130 employees at the Jackson County Sheriff's Office have voted to affiliate with Teamsters Local 223. The decision marks a significant shift for the local association, which seeks to amplify its bargaining power while maintaining its status as the primary representative for the unit.

The affiliation covers both full-time and part-time staff, excluding supervisory roles. Austin DePaolo, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 223, emphasized that the union’s immediate priority is to address the specific workplace concerns raised by the staff, focusing on compensation and professional benefits.

Steven Sagert II, President of the Jackson County Sheriff's Employees Association, stated that the move provides members with necessary leverage at the bargaining table. By aligning with a larger organization that has operated in Oregon and Washington since 1938, the employees aim to secure more robust protections and build upon previous labor gains. The association retains its role as the lead negotiator, now backed by the broader resources of the Teamsters.
