SciBase gains first US insurance coverage for Nevisense skin technology

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has granted its first positive medical policy for Nevisense, the diagnostic skin technology developed by Swedish firm SciBase. This decision marks a shift from a cash-pay model toward reimbursed care, addressing a primary barrier to wider clinical adoption across the United States dermatology market.

The coverage policy deems Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) medically necessary for dermatologists evaluating atypical pigmented lesions. Under the new guidelines, usage is authorized for patients aged 18 and older when melanoma is suspected, provided the lesion is located on the trunk or extremities and measures between 2 mm and 20 mm. Highmark’s decision aligns with the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines for Cutaneous Melanoma, which acknowledge the role of non-invasive diagnostics in clinical practice.

For SciBase, the move represents a critical inflection point in its U.S. commercial strategy. While the company previously established momentum through private, out-of-pocket payments, the inclusion of Highmark—which serves over 7 million members—creates a scalable pathway for growth. CEO Pia Renaudin identified the policy as a defining milestone that allows the company to reach a substantially larger portion of the U.S. market. With approximately 6,000 dermatology clinics identified as relevant for the platform, the company intends to continue its engagement with other payers while leveraging this new reimbursement model to simplify access for both clinicians and patients.
