Shopify expands AI agent access to billion-item catalog
Shoppers can now authorize AI agents to browse and purchase products across Shopify’s massive catalog of over a billion listings. By connecting these digital assistants to the Shop platform, users grant agents the ability to navigate storefronts and execute transactions directly through the one-click Shop Pay checkout system.

This move shifts Shopify away from exclusive partnerships, such as its previous deal with Meta’s Muse, toward an open ecosystem where any agent can be configured to act on a user’s behalf. Customers maintain control by setting specific constraints, including budget limits and shipping preferences, while retaining the final say with a required approval for every purchase. All activity is funneled through the Shop app, which aggregates order history and package tracking.
E-commerce has emerged as a primary battleground for AI development, with tech giants like Google and Amazon racing to integrate autonomous purchasing tools into their platforms. This shift mirrors broader industry tensions, specifically the ongoing friction between major retailers and AI companies over the rights of software agents to interact with storefronts. As these tools become more sophisticated, the race to define the boundaries of automated shopping continues to intensify.
