Vimeo hit by sweeping layoffs following Bending Spoons acquisition

Months after Italian software firm Bending Spoons finalized its $1.38 billion acquisition of Vimeo, the platform has initiated a massive workforce reduction. Former employees describe the cuts as impacting a significant portion of the company, with reports suggesting entire departments, including the video engineering team, have been dismantled.

Bending Spoons spokesperson Camilla Bettinelli confirmed the layoffs but withheld specific figures regarding the scale of the departure. The lack of clarity has fueled speculation among former staff, many of whom took to LinkedIn to characterize the downsizing as a near-total clearing of the company’s ranks. Reports from Israel indicate that the majority of Vimeo’s local workforce has already been dismissed.

This marks the second round of job cuts at the company in less than six months, following a 10 percent reduction last September just before the acquisition announcement. The strategy aligns with Bending Spoons' history of aggressive restructuring following its purchases of companies like Evernote, Filmic, and WeTransfer. These developments now cast uncertainty over the future of Vimeo’s hosted content, including independent productions from outlets like Dropout.
