Duke Energy Florida pays EV owners to shift charging times

With Florida trailing only California in electric vehicle registrations, Duke Energy is leveraging its Off-Peak Charging Credit program to manage grid demand. Since 2022, the utility has distributed $1.5 million in bill credits to residents who shift their vehicle charging to periods of lower energy consumption.

The program targets residential customers using Level 2 chargers, offering a $7.50 monthly credit for those who adhere to specific charging windows. Eligible times include weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., as well as all hours on weekends and holidays. Customers may enroll up to two vehicles per account.

Melissa Seixas, state president for Duke Energy Florida, framed the initiative as an effortless method for drivers to trim monthly expenses. The utility, which serves 2 million customers across the state, aims to incentivize behavior that eases pressure on the grid during peak hours. Interested residents can register their vehicles through the company's official portal.
