Right-Wing Smear Campaign Against James Talarico Crumbles

A coordinated disinformation effort targeting Texas Democratic candidate James Talarico collapsed on Sunday, just hours after influencers circulated a falsified audio recording. The campaign, which alleged Talarico had secretly sought mental health treatment in Ohio, was debunked by both the facility in question and the candidate's public schedule.

The narrative began when MAGA influencers Nick Sortor and Rhein Amacher released a 45-second audio clip purportedly featuring an employee at the Lindner Center of Hope discussing Talarico’s discharge. The claim was intended to fuel rumors surrounding Talarico’s recent week-long absence from the campaign trail, which his staff had attributed to a bout of the flu. However, the timeline immediately failed: the recording claimed a Saturday discharge, while Talarico had already made a public appearance at the Austin City Limits festival on Friday.

The Lindner Center of Hope issued a statement confirming that Talarico had never received treatment at their facility. A full six-minute recording obtained by The Bulwark revealed that the employee in the clip had repeatedly denied having any record of Talarico, only suggesting he might have been discharged after being persistently badgered by Amacher to confirm his presence. Following the exposure, some influencers involved in the scheme began deleting their posts. Talarico dismissed the fabrication, noting he had never been to Ohio, while his spokesman, JT Ennis, labeled the attempt a pathetic conspiracy theory.
