Why Holiday Gifting Is a Strategic Tool for 2027 Employee Retention

Seventy-eight percent of employees report that a thoughtful holiday gift boosts their motivation heading into the new year, yet nearly half of the workforce has received company presents that felt impersonal. New research from Snappy suggests that moving away from one-size-fits-all gifting is essential for sustaining long-term engagement.

The 2026 Employee Holiday Gifting Report, which surveyed 1,500 full-time U.S. workers, reveals that the impact of a well-chosen gift extends far beyond the season. Among those who experienced increased job satisfaction, 66% noted that the positive effect lasted three months or longer. When recognition is perceived as genuine, it serves as a powerful signal that an employer values both an individual's output and their personal identity.

However, the data indicates a disconnect between corporate efforts and employee expectations. Forty-nine percent of respondents have received gifts that left them feeling misunderstood, with 82% of those individuals stating the gesture felt hollow. To counter this, many organizations are shifting toward recipient-choice models, allowing staff to select items that align with their personal preferences rather than receiving generic company swag. By prioritizing personalization and planning well ahead of the December rush, HR leaders can transform a simple holiday tradition into a strategic investment in culture and retention for the year ahead.
