Meta Slashes Thousands of Jobs to Fund AI Expansion
Meta is shedding approximately 8,000 staff members as the tech giant pivots its massive capital reserves toward artificial intelligence. Management confirmed the headcount reduction in an internal memo, framing the layoffs as a necessary trade-off to accommodate staggering expenditures on the company’s ambitious Superintelligence Labs and future core operations.
The scale of the reduction affects roughly 10 percent of the company’s 78,000-person workforce. This decision follows a stark financial forecast in January, where Meta projected capital expenditures between $115 billion and $135 billion for 2026. This figure nearly doubles the $72.22 billion spent in 2025, signaling a total reorganization of resources toward machine learning infrastructure.
Beyond the direct layoffs, the company is shifting over 7,000 employees into new AI-focused roles while simultaneously shuttering 6,000 open positions. Impacted staff have begun sharing news of their departures on LinkedIn, posting photos of company badges as the cuts take effect. Meta’s leadership characterized the move as a push for operational efficiency, thanking departing employees for their contributions while prioritizing the company's long-term AI strategy.
