Acknowledging the surge in social media interest, the company has released its own technical guide for building a portable cyberdeck, moving the hobbyist practice into the realm of standardized tutorials.
The company’s official build centers on a Raspberry Pi 5, utilizing a straightforward Pelican-style case to house the board, a flash drive, and a LiPo battery beneath a Bluetooth keyboard. While the guide offers a practical entry point, it contrasts sharply with the creative extremes seen on platforms like TikTok, where creators like Annike Tan routinely retrofit vintage accessories into functional hardware.
This shift toward DIY portability coincides with a challenging financial climate for the company. Following multiple price hikes throughout the year driven by rising component costs, the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 saw a $100 increase this past April—a jump that nearly matches the board’s initial $120 retail price. By providing resources for these custom builds, the company is leaning into a community of hobbyists who are increasingly focused on maximizing the utility of existing hardware in unconventional, recycled enclosures.
