Greenville Technical College Unveils Advanced Welding Training Hub

A 44,000-square-foot facility opened in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 20, 2026, aiming to bridge the national gap between welding job vacancies and skilled labor. The Center for Welding & Automation Excellence now stands as the largest and most advanced training site for the trade in the Southeast.

The facility addresses a critical labor shortage where current data shows only one new welder entering the field for every four who retire. Backed by $15 million in state funding and $3 million in federal support, the center features an AI-powered welding lab and expanded robotics capabilities. Total capacity for the program has surged from 90 to 122 welding stations, while the college and Greenville County Schools have collectively increased regional training seats by 305% to accommodate 486 students.

Corporate partnerships played a pivotal role in the construction and outfitting of the building. Firms including Fluor, Vermeer Charitable Foundation, and Lincoln Electric provided significant capital and equipment, including specialized robotics and laser welding technology. President Larry Miller noted that the center serves as a vehicle for economic mobility, providing students with the technical mastery required to meet modern industrial demands while offering industry partners a front-row view of the next generation of welders through the building's second-floor observation deck.
