Union Leader Bob Brooks Wins Pennsylvania Primary in Populist Surge
Bob Brooks, head of Pennsylvania’s largest firefighters’ union, secured the Democratic nomination for the state's 7th Congressional District on Tuesday. By clinching nearly 48% of the vote, the labor leader overcame a crowded field and a $1 million opposition ad campaign to set up a general election challenge against Republican incumbent Ryan Mackenzie.

Addressing supporters in the historic steel town of Bethlehem, Brooks framed his victory as a turning point for working-class representation. His campaign drew support from a broad coalition, ranging from Senator Bernie Sanders to Governor Josh Shapiro and former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg. This diverse backing underscores the strategic importance of the 7th District, which national strategists view as a critical battleground for control of the House.
The path to the nomination was not without friction. In the final weeks of the race, an outside entity known as Left PAC poured $1 million into an ad campaign aimed at stalling the firefighter's momentum. Despite the spending, the result was celebrated by progressive groups like Our Revolution as a validation of an unapologetic, populist economic platform. Strategist Lis Smith noted that the win signals a shift, identifying the race as one of the most promising opportunities for Democrats to flip a seat this fall.
Brooks’ success follows a broader trend of labor-aligned candidates gaining traction in recent primaries, including wins by iron worker Brian Poindexter in Ohio and union organizer Analilia Mejía in New Jersey. In a separate victory on Tuesday, democratic socialist Chris Rabb won his primary in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District. Together, these results reinforce a message pushed by the Working Families Party: that a focus on working-class issues remains a potent electoral strategy across both urban centers like Philadelphia and the industrial Lehigh Valley.
