Cooking in Orbit: The Engineering Behind the First Space-Station Roast
In November 2025, astronauts aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station successfully roasted marinated chicken wings, moving beyond the era of pre-packaged, reheated rations. While the process appears deceptively simple, the milestone represents the culmination of 50 years of engineering attempts to safely manage heat, smoke, and floating debris in microgravity.

The Shenzhou–20 and Shenzhou–21 crews utilized a specialized, space-certified hot-air oven to complete the 28-minute cooking test. Conventional roasting has long been considered impossible in orbit due to the severe safety risks posed by free-floating food particles, oil fumes, and smoke within the sealed environment of a space module. Previous missions relied exclusively on pre-prepared meals that required only warming.
To overcome these obstacles, the new oven integrates multi-stage smoke filtration, forced hot-air circulation, and dedicated oil collection systems. By containing residues and maintaining air quality, the device allows for genuine meal preparation without contaminating the station's atmosphere. Beyond the technical achievement, the shift toward in-orbit cooking serves a vital psychological function, offering improved dining conditions to mitigate stress during long-duration missions and establishing a foundation for future deep-space exploration.
