Google Mandates 24-Hour Wait for Android Sideloading

A mandatory one-day waiting period will soon define the process for sideloading unverified Android applications. Google’s new "advanced flow" aims to curb high-pressure scams by introducing friction, forcing users to pause and confirm their intent before bypassing standard security protections on their devices.

The installation process involves a multi-step verification sequence designed to thwart attackers who manipulate victims into disabling security features. Users must activate developer mode, confirm they are not being coached by third parties, and restart their devices to terminate remote access sessions. After these steps, a 24-hour cooling-off period begins, requiring final authentication via biometric data or a device PIN. Once this period expires, users may opt to install apps from unverified sources for seven days or indefinitely.

Matthew Forsythe, Android’s director of product management, frames the shift as a necessary defense against scammers who rely on manufactured urgency. While the policy intends to protect the ecosystem, it has drawn sharp criticism from the developer community. The Keep Android Open campaign argues that these barriers threaten innovation and privacy, with some developers labeling the move an effective ban on general-purpose mobile computing. The new installation flow will be available in August, ahead of mandatory developer registration requirements that begin in select countries this September and expand globally by 2027.
