OpenAI Launches Computer History to Track Desktop Workflow

OpenAI has introduced Computer History for its macOS desktop application, a feature that monitors user keystrokes and clicks to transform daily activity into training data. By logging interactions, the tool aims to assist with half-finished tasks, suggest automations, and provide a chronological recap of a user's digital workday.

The system builds a searchable timeline that ChatGPT and Codex reference when processing user requests. According to Ari Weinstein, a product and engineering manager at the company, the feature operates on an opt-in basis, allowing users to exclude specific applications or websites from the tracking process. Additionally, the software is programmed to automatically ignore activity occurring within incognito or private browser sessions.

OpenAI emphasizes that this functionality differs significantly from Microsoft’s Windows Recall. Rather than capturing visual screenshots, audio, or video, the tool logs discrete activity "events." In a recent demonstration, developer Dominik Kundel showcased the assistant retrieving documents, verifying Slack sharing status, and summarizing morning workflows, highlighting the system's focus on text-based behavioral analysis.
