New York Teamsters Secure Landmark Wage Gains at Southern Glazer's
After a 24-hour picket line standoff, 200 Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits employees across New York have ratified a five-year contract featuring a 30 percent wage hike. The deal, covering five Teamsters locals, concludes a brief but intense labor dispute centered on compensation and long-term security in an era of automation.
The agreement marks a victory for members of Locals 118, 294, 317, 445, and 449, who authorized the strike following stalled negotiations over pension contributions and working conditions. Beyond the substantial pay raises, the contract mandates a 20 percent increase in employer pension contributions and secures additional paid time off for the workforce. Crucially, the union maintained its 100 percent employer-paid health coverage while successfully negotiating new protections against the displacement effects of AI and automation.
Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, credited the workers' resolve for the rapid resolution. Local 118 President Timothy Barbeto echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the effectiveness of cross-state solidarity. For long-term employees like 20-year shop steward Brian Caccamise, the result validates a collective refusal to settle for less than a contract that reflects their contribution to the company's regional success.
